How Much Sand Do You Need for a Paver Base?

Bedding-sand depth versus the gravel base beneath it, with worked examples for a 10×12 patio and a walkway.

Sand is the bedding, not the whole base

A paver patio that lasts is mostly crushed stone. ICPI Tech Spec 2 tells crews to screed bedding sand to a nominal 1 inch (25 mm) and not to use sand to fill a wavy base. Bedding sand should meet ASTM C33 (concrete sand); mason sand is ASTM C144 for mortar. For most U.S. patios the stack is compacted subgrade, 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel (ICPI notes thicker bases for streets and freeze climates), then about 1 inch of concrete sand, then the pavers, then joint sand.

The sand calculator on this site will happily compute 4 inches if you type it. That does not make 4 inches a good patio spec. Type the bedding depth you actually intend.

Worked patio numbers

A 10 × 12 patio is 120 square feet. Bedding sand at 1 inch is 120 × 1 ÷ 324 = 0.4 cubic yards, about 0.5 tons at 1.35 tons per yard. That is a few 50-pound bags or a small bulk scoop. The gravel under it, at 6 inches, is 120 × 6 ÷ 324 = 2.2 yards — that is the load people forget when they only run a “sand calculator.”

A 3 × 20 walkway is 60 square feet. One inch of sand is 0.2 yards. You will still want a gravel base. Edge restraint matters as much as the sand quantity; without it the bedding walks out and the pavers open.

Which sand

Use concrete sand or coarse washed concrete sand for the bedding. It is angular enough to lock. Mason sand is finer and can behave like a lubricant when wet. Play sand is the wrong product — too uniform, too round, and often too dirty for structural work.

Joint sand is a different buy. Polymeric joint sand is sold in bags sized to the joint width, not to the bedding volume. Do not order bedding sand from the joint-sand coverage chart on a polymeric bag.

Screeding and waste

You will lose sand to the first pass of the screed board and to the edges. On a small patio, 10% extra on 0.4 yards is only a couple of extra bags, and it is worth it. On a 400 square-foot patio, 10% of 1.2 yards is 0.12 yards — still bag territory. The waste switch on the calculator is the right tool for this, not a second guess.

Do not compact the bedding the way you compact gravel. Screed it, lay pavers, then compact the pavers so they seat into the sand. Over-compacting the bed first makes waves.

How to enter it

Open the sand calculator, rectangle, 10 and 12, depth 1 inch. Read yards and tons. If your pit sells by the ton, use the default ton price band or type their ton price. If they sell by the yard, switch the cost mode. Leave play-sand pricing out of a patio job; the $25–40 per ton play-sand band is a different product.

Driveways are not patios

A paver driveway wants a thicker compacted stone base (often 8 to 12 inches) and still only about an inch of bedding sand. If you copy the 6-inch patio gravel number onto a driveway, the pavers will rut. The sand calculator should still see 1 inch of sand. The stone is a different material and a different truck.

Edge restraint on a driveway takes vehicle loads. Plastic spikes that are fine on a walkway will not hold a tire. Quantity of sand will not save a missing edge.
