Sod Rolls vs Pallets: What You Are Actually Buying

A pallet is a stack of rolls

You are not choosing “rolls or pallets” as two different products. You are choosing how the same grass is packaged. A roll is a strip of harvested turf. A pallet is how those rolls travel. This site’s defaults — 10 square feet per roll (CT Sod’s 2 × 5 ft big-roll), 450 square feet per pallet (USA Sod, The Grass Outlet, and HomeGuide’s ~450 sq ft pallet note) — match a common U.S. combination. Your farm may differ, and when it does, believe the farm.

Garden centers sometimes sell small 2-square-foot or 5-square-foot pieces for patching. Those are the wrong unit for a new lawn. They dry out on the way home and they cost more per foot.

Why rolls round up and pallets do not

A 1,000 square-foot lawn is 100 rolls exactly at 10 square feet, and 2.22 pallets at 450, shown as 2.2. Rolls are whole units you can carry, so the tool ceils them. Pallets are a farm packaging size that varies, so the tool leaves the decimal and lets you round when you order. You cannot buy 0.2 of a pallet from most farms. Ask for two pallets plus loose rolls, or three full pallets.

The measured lawn area on the results card stays honest. Waste increases the order quantity, not the size of the yard you typed.

Big rolls versus small rolls on the ground

Big rolls need a machine or a strong crew. They go down faster and have fewer seams, which matters on a visible front yard. Small rolls are what two people can carry around a side gate. If you have a 36-inch gate and no skid steer, do not let the farm talk you into 4-foot-wide slabs unless they are also installing.

Seams should be staggered, like brickwork. Butt the edges; do not overlap. Overlapped sod dies in a ridge. Stretched sod shrinks later and leaves a gap. Order a little extra from the farm rather than stretching rolls to make the number close.

Price per roll is a trap

HomeGuide lists rolls at about $3–$8 for 8–10 square feet. A $6 roll that covers 10 square feet is $0.60 per square foot. A $4 roll that covers 5 square feet is $0.80. Always convert to feet or to a pallet. The sod calculator’s unit-price mode accepts either dollars per square foot or dollars per pallet so you can enter the quote the way the farm said it.

Harvest day is a logistics day

Sod is cut to order more often than people think. If you ask for “a few extra rolls for later,” you are asking the farm to keep living plants on a pallet. They will charge you and the extra will still want to be in the ground. Order the pallet count you and the farm agree on after converting their coverage, not a second mystery pallet “just in case,” unless you have a place to put it the same day.

In heat, start laying at the pallet and work outward so the last pieces have spent the least time rolled. Keep a knife sharp. Straight cuts at walks look like you hired someone; torn edges look like you fought the roll.
