Topsoil Cost in Florida

A lot of Florida is already sand

UF/IFAS shows how Florida parcels in Web Soil Survey are often mapped as fine sands (their example uses Seffner and Zolfo fine sand). What people call topsoil may be a darker mix sold to hold nutrients, not a Midwest loam. Fill dirt is its own market because lots are raised for drainage. Do not buy fill when you wanted a planting mix, and do not buy an organic garden blend to raise a lot 8 inches — it will shrink and it will be expensive.

Angi / Lawn Love national bands still apply as a first pass: fill $10–20 per yard on this site, screened or blended “topsoil” $15–25 and up. South Florida and island-adjacent jobs can add haul cost. Inland and agricultural areas may be cheaper. Always local-check.

Lawns and the water table

St. Augustine and other warm-season sods are common. The sod calculator’s 450 square-foot pallet default (USA Sod / The Grass Outlet) still works for planning; USA Sod notes Florida farms often cut 400. Soil depth under new sod should still be a real 4 inches of a mix that can hold a root (Nebraska Extension), not 4 inches of raw fill sand.

Low lots pond. Adding topsoil without a grade plan can raise water against the slab. If the yard holds water now, talk to someone who understands drainage before you order 12 yards of anything. The calculator will correctly tell you the volume of a bad idea.

Storms and washouts

After a tropical storm, people replace washed-out beds and regrade swales. Measure the hole; do not reorder last year’s 10 yards by memory. A 20 × 10 washout averaging 5 inches is 3.1 yards. That is a trailer, not a dump-truck minimum, unless the yard has a minimum load.

If you are rebuilding a bed that flooded, ask whether the mix is sandy enough to drain. A compost-heavy blend in a low Florida bed can stay anaerobic.

Example order

A 50 × 20 new sod panel (1,000 sq ft) at 4 inches is 12.3 yards, 16.6 tons. At $22 per yard and $80 delivery, you are at $350 delivered. Run the same 1,000 square feet through the sod calculator for pallets. Get the soil down and graded before the sod farm harvests; Florida heat does not forgive sod sitting on a pallet in a driveway.

Fill, limestone, and “marl”

You will hear fill, sand fill, and sometimes marl or crushed limestone used to build grade. Those are structural or drainage products. Put a planting mix on top if anything is meant to grow. HOA St. Augustine panels

Many Florida HOAs want a green strip, not a farm. Measure that strip. A 8 × 40 parkway is 320 square feet — 0.7 pallets of sod at 450 and 4.0 yards of soil at 4 inches. People order a whole truck because “Florida lots are big” and then store soil against the house through rainy season. Size the panel you are allowed to plant. If the association only allows St. Augustine in the front 20 feet, that is the only area that should hit the sod calculator.
