Topsoil Cost in Texas

What Texas yards tend to sell, why blackland clay and caliche change the order, and how to use the calculator on a typical suburban lot.

The state is not one soil market

Houston’s coastal clay, Dallas–Fort Worth’s blackland prairie, Austin’s limestone and caliche, and West Texas caliche are different buying problems. The University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology describes Blackland Prairie soils as clayey with high shrink-swell (Houston Black, Heiden, and related series). Look up your parcel on USDA Web Soil Survey rather than trusting a statewide price. This site still uses Angi/Lawn Love national bands; we have not surveyed Texas tickets.

What you are usually correcting

In much of North and Central Texas the native material is clay or a thin soil over caliche. Fill dirt is abundant from basement and pond work. Decent screened topsoil is less abundant. Builders often leave a clay grade with a sprinkle of darker soil. If you sod on that, the lawn lives on a pancake.

For a new lawn, keep the 4-inch preset unless a local installer specifies more (Penn State 4–6 in firmed; Nebraska Extension ~4 in before sod). A 6,000 square-foot Texas suburban backyard at 4 inches is 74.1 yards — several trucks, not a trailer. People under-order here because the lot looks “already graded.”

Heat, water, and depth

Summer is long. A 2-inch cap over clay will bake. If the budget cannot do 4 inches on the whole lawn, do 4 inches on the visible front and the play area, and be honest about the rest. Top-dressing an existing Bermuda lawn at 1.5 inches (the calculator preset) is a common spring job and much cheaper: 6,000 square feet at 1.5 inches is 27.8 yards.

Ask whether the mix drains. Some cheap “sandy loam” in Texas is sand that will not hold water through August. Some “black garden soil” is clay that will not drain in a January downpour. Look at the pile in your hand, not the color on Instagram.

Delivery quirks

HOA fences, caliche driveways, and long rural laterals all change the dump. A truck that cannot reach the back will dump on the driveway, and 12 yards of clay-heavy soil will stain concrete if you leave it there. Have plywood or a plan. Delivery fees still sit in Angi’s national $50–$150-per-trip band unless a yard adds a long-haul fuel surcharge — we have not surveyed Texas tickets.

A concrete example

A 40 × 25 backyard (1,000 sq ft) at 4 inches is 12.3 yards and about 16.6 tons. At $20 per yard plus $90 delivery, material-plus-delivery is $336, about $27 per yard delivered. Add sod separately with the sod calculator. If a yard quotes $40 per ton instead, 16.6 tons is $664 before delivery — ask whether they meant yards.

HOA and builder soils

New Texas subdivisions often have a thin “landscaper mix” already spread. Test it with a shovel. If you hit sticky clay at 2 inches, you do not have a 4-inch lawn bed. Either till and import the missing inches or accept a lawn that will thin every July. The calculator should be run on the missing depth, not on a full 4 inches you already paid the builder for in theory.
